About:
subject/matter is an architecture and design studio based in Columbus, OH. Our passion is crafting new relationships between people, spaces, and materials. We work at a variety of scales.
Architecture matters at subject/matter studio.We develop designs that are bold, lyrical, and optimistic about the future. Our studio was founded in Columbus, Ohio with the ambition of developing innovative projects for like-minded clients in the Midwest and beyond. Our work has been featured in Architect magazine and the Architect’s Newspaper, and we’ve exhibited widely. The studio is led by Justin Diles, AIA who is also Associate Professor of Architecture at The Ohio State University.
We shape materials/materials shape us. This relationship animates our practice. We are hands-on. We enjoy designing buildings and fabricating special projects to test the boundaries of what is possible.

About Justin Diles, AIA
Justin is a licensed architect in Ohio and a native of the Midwest. He practiced architecture with large and small firms in St. Louis and Philadelphia before joining the faculty of the University of Applied Arts Vienna where he taught for four years. He joined the faculty at The Ohio State University in 2012 and is Associate Professor of Architecture and Materials Science & Engineering. He holds a degree in architecture from the University of Pennsylvania where he was awarded the Faculty Prize.
Justin lives in Columbus’ Clintonville neighborhood with his wife Jenny, a filmmaker, and their dog Gene.
